Mechanicsville Man Charged After Deputy Finds Loaded Handgun During Investigation

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Mechanicsville man was charged after deputies reported finding a loaded handgun on him during an investigation at a residence in Mechanicsville.

Michael Ignatius Somerville, 45, of Mechanicsville, was charged with handgun in vehicle, loaded handgun in vehicle, handgun on person and loaded handgun on person.

The charges stem from an incident reported July 18, 2026, on Old Lockes Hill Road in Mechanicsville.

Charging documents state a deputy was conducting an investigation at the address when Somerville arrived at the residence driving a white Ford F-150 with Waste Management decals on the driver and passenger doors.

Somerville was detained during the investigation and identified by his Oregon driver’s license, charging documents state.

Once detained, Somerville admitted he had a handgun on his person, investigators wrote.

Deputies reported finding a Springfield XD Elite 9mm handgun in an inside-the-waistband holster on Somerville’s right hip. The handgun was loaded with a full magazine, charging documents state.

Somerville told deputies he did not have a wear and carry permit. The Maryland Gun Center was contacted and confirmed Somerville did not possess a Maryland wear and carry permit, according to charging documents.

Investigators reported Somerville admitted taking the firearm from his residence on Old Lockes Hill Road, driving to Food Lion for groceries and then returning home.

Somerville was released on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond on July 19.

A hearing is set for Aug. 31, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
