CALIFORNIA, Md. – On May 14, 2025, the Business, Education and Community Alliance (BECA) held their 2025 Scholarship Awards Ceremony at the University of Maryland SMART Building. BECA is a local non-profit organization founded in 1989 jointly by the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce and Superintendent of Schools with the mission of bringing together businesses, community organizations and individuals to help students from St. Mary’s County achieve their higher education goals. Over 75 scholarship offers valued at over $250,000 were presented by scholarship providers.

MetCom is proud to be one of the providers and presented three (3) scholarships to dependents of current MetCom employees. Ms. Lynn Alvey, Ms. Fiona Insley and Ms. Allison Quinn were selected by the Scholarship Committee to each receive a $2,000 scholarship award.

The Scholarship for the Children and Grandchildren of MetCom Employees program is privately funded through the generous donations of Mr. Keith Fairfax, and is independently administered through the BECA. No customer/rate payer’s monies are utilized to establish or supplement these scholarships.

Mr. George Erichsen, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Commission stated, “Scholarship programs such as this help provide our youth with another way to afford the rising costs of colleges and trade schools. It is so encouraging to see the growing number of individuals and organizations offering financial opportunities for our local students.”

Metcom employees also personally contribute to the Commission’s scholarship fund through payroll deductions. Eligible applicants include high school seniors, high school graduates or current college students who are children, step-children or grandchildren of current Metropolitan Commission employees. Applicants must have achieved academic excellence in high school or college and plan to enroll full-time in an accredited college or in an accredited vocational training program.
