California, MD — The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) will begin interviewing once again for a new executive director. Current Director Daniel Ichniowski announced his retirement last year, but a search for a new director ended with two of the final three candidates dropping out and one declining an offer.

The commission has re-advertised the position and according to Ichniowski 28 applications have been received, of which a dozen were determined to be qualified.

The same four commissioners who comprised the earlier interview team will narrow the candidate list to a handful who will be interviewed. The commission hopes to make a selection of the new executive director at their July 23 meeting.

Ichniowski, who has been continuing to serve until his replacement was hired, told the commission at its June 18 meeting that July 31 will be his last day.

The salary range for the new director is being advertised as $109,140 – $174,624 annually. According to the ad, “The ideal candidate will be dynamic, have strong interpersonal skills, a progressive and collaborative management style, excellent judgment, stay abreast of industry trends and technology, have a strong understanding of finance and public debt, the ability to lead, motivate, guide and mentor empowered staff and place a high priority on community outreach and customer service. Essential Functions: Coordinates, plans and manages the activities of the Commission through the combined efforts of the Administrative, Fiscal and Engineering Departments. Oversees and provides technical management for all operations, activities and programs within the Commission. Acts as a liaison between Federal, State, and Local Governmental agencies whose policies, laws, regulations, and directives impact upon departmental and Commission activities, operations, projects, and programs.
