PORT TOBACCO, Md. — Summer’s final waterfront celebration will bring together community members, local leaders and river advocates for an evening of music, food and fundraising along one of Southern Maryland’s most treasured natural resources. The Port Tobacco River Conservancy will host Night on the River on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Port Tobacco Restaurant, where guests will enjoy buffet dinner, signature drinks and sunset views overlooking the river.

The waterfront event supports the conservancy’s ongoing work to preserve and protect the river through stewardship, education and community engagement. A VIP early-access hour begins at 5 p.m., and attendees will have opportunities to connect with conservation advocates and supporters invested in protecting the river’s long-term health.

“The Port Tobacco River is part of our history, our environment, our summers and our identity,” the Port Tobacco River Conservancy said in a statement. “When you attend, sponsor or support this event, you help ensure that our river remains healthy and thriving for future generations.”

As part of Night on the River, the Port Tobacco River Conservancy is inviting artists of all ages to participate in its “Art Inspired By Our River” community art contest.

The contest encourages participants to create original artwork inspired by the Port Tobacco River, including its wildlife, landscapes, natural beauty, environmental importance and cultural or historic significance.

Artists ages 6 and older may enter in one of three age categories: ages 6-12, ages 13-17 and ages 18 and older. Accepted mediums include painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, digital art and other original artwork. Participants may submit up to two entries, and all artwork must be suitable for public display.

Submitted artwork will be displayed during Night on the River on Aug. 29, where event attendees will have the opportunity to view the pieces and vote for their favorites. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, artistic presentation and connection to the Port Tobacco River theme.

Awards will be presented in each age category, including Best in Show and People’s Choice honors. Prize packages may include cash prizes, gift cards, art supplies, Port Tobacco River Conservancy merchandise, outdoor-themed items and featured recognition through the organization’s communications.

Artists also have the option to donate their artwork to the conservancy. Donated pieces may be included in the Night on the River auction, with proceeds supporting efforts to preserve and protect the Port Tobacco River.

The deadline for submissions is Aug. 1.
