PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved two new school resource officers for the public schools in the county, to be reimbursed by the Board of Education. This brings the total number of school resource officers (or SROs) in the county to 16. The county has 22 schools across all grade levels.
Prior to adding the two new officers, Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) had 14 SROs, 10 of which were funded by the Sheriff’s Office and four by the Board of Education (BOE) and CCPS. The two new officers will also be funded by CCPS and the BOE.
The initial fiscal year 2026 fiscal impact is $207,167.03, to include $121,764 in salaries, $60,882 in benefits and $24,521.03 in additional associated deputy costs. The overall fiscal impact will be $0, upon FY 2026 reimbursement of $207,167.03 from the Calvert County Board of Education/CCPS, updating the existing reimbursement understanding to $621,501.09.
Sheriff Cox said his goal is to make sure all schools have an SRO. These additional officers are part of the “gradual buildup” to getting the district to the desired levels.
“It’s always been my goal to get our deputies inside schools. Not just to secure our schools, but to mentor our kids, too,” he said. He said the deputies are a valued part of the school communities and highlighted the recent D.A.R.E. camp at Windy Hill Elementary as a positive example of how the deputies connect with students and mentor the youth.
Cox said the middle and high schools in the county all have designated SROs already, but six elementary schools will remain without an SRO even after these new officers come on board. They have SROs do drop-ins or cover the elementary schools if they’re on the same campus as one of the middle or high schools. But he emphasized that the best solution was to get a dedicated SRO for each school. He did not say during the Aug. 5 meeting to which schools the new officers would be assigned.
“They have a huge role in our school system,” Cox said, and added that CCSO works to find candidates eager to serve in a community role in addition to being an officer.
The BOCC approved the new positions in a 5-0 vote.
