LA PLATA, Md. — A motorcyclist was seriously injured Sunday evening in a collision with a van on Hawthorne Road near Quailwood Parkway.

Charles County emergency dispatchers received the first 911 call at 7:40 p.m. on May 31. Callers reported that the motorcyclist tried to pass a stopped vehicle and was struck by a turning van. They also said the rider was initially moving and breathing.

Responding emergency units found a man in his 30s with an open leg fracture, head injuries, and intermittent loss of consciousness. His helmet remained in place. Dispatch notes indicated he later regained consciousness and tried to move.

Emergency crews from multiple stations responded, and by 7:50 p.m. a landing zone had been established at Hawthorne Country Club on Hawthorne Road. Road closures were put in place to support the operation.

The first patient was transported to MedStar Trauma Center in Washington, D.C. The unit left the scene at 8:19 p.m. and arrived at the center at 8:46 p.m.

A second patient, a 37-year-old man, was transported to Fort Washington Medical Center. He was reported to be alert, and no backboard or cervical collar was required.

The incident remains under investigation.
