PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A vibrant new mural celebrating the wonders of Chesapeake Bay wildlife is now traveling across Calvert County, thanks to a unique youth mentorship initiative that blends art, science, and community pride.
The mural, titled Beneath the Bay, was created during the spring session of Calvert County Parks and Recreation’s Youth Mentor Program. The 10-week program, made possible through a $70,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association, focuses on engaging youth ages 10 to 14 in interactive sessions that promote life skills, wellness, and citizenship.
“This program is all about creating safe and enriching opportunities for our youth,” said Calvert County Parks and Recreation Director Shannon Nazzal. “They were able to express themselves artistically while learning about local ecosystems and the importance of protecting our waterways.”
In collaboration with the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and Calvert Marine Museum, participants explored native species and conservation practices before designing and painting the mural together.
“Working with the students on this mural was incredibly inspiring,” said Laura McCann, education coordinator at the Calvert Marine Museum. “They really connected with the message of environmental stewardship and brought their own creativity to the project.”
The colorful mural—featuring aquatic life native to the Chesapeake Bay—is already making its way to public spaces around the county. Residents are encouraged to snap a photo when they see it and tag #CCPR and #BeneathTheBayMural on social media.
“It’s not just a piece of art,” said Parks and Recreation Program Specialist Shari Rodgers. “It’s a mobile message from our youth to our community: Let’s take care of the Bay.”
The Youth Mentor Program is expected to continue with additional sessions throughout the year, building on the success of projects like Beneath the Bay to foster creativity, connection, and civic responsibility.
