Clinton, MD — MedStar Health announced that Christine R. Wray, FACHE, has been chosen to succeed Michael J. Chiaramonte, MBA as president of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center effective September 6, 2014. Wray will continue to serve in her current role as president of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital where she has served as its president since 1992.
“Christine Wray brings a strong understanding of the healthcare needs of Southern Maryland residents, a commitment to delivering safe, high quality patient care and an excellent track record given her 30 years of experience in healthcare,” said M. Joy Drass, MD, MedStar Health’s executive vice president of Operations for the Washington region. Under her leadership, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has won numerous accolades including the Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement for seven years in a row and being selected as one of Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals in 2013. Wray herself has been honored as a visionary leader as well. The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce honored her as the Business Person of the Year in 2000, and she also received the 2009 Leading Edge CEO of the Year Award from the College of Southern Maryland. Through her service on numerous civic boards and councils as well as regional and statewide healthcare advisory committees, Wray has proven herself to be a strong advocate for Southern Maryland healthcare. She joined MedStar Health’s Leadership Team in 2009.
Wray attended The Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in public health. She went on to earn a Master of Health Planning and Administration from The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Wray’s appointment reflects MedStar Health’s ongoing alignment of its network of physician offices and hospitals in order to provide patients with medical and surgical care in a coordinated manner. By serving as the president of both MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, Wray will lead the two facilities’ growth and development so that Southern Maryland residents will gain greater access to high quality healthcare in their community.
“I am pleased that Christine Wray has been appointed to lead MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. For as long as I have known her, I have been impressed by her acute care knowledge and unwavering commitment to patient service and quality,” said outgoing hospital president Michael J. Chiaramonte. “I am confident that the leadership of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center will continue to build on my family’s legacy and deliver excellent healthcare throughout the region for many years to come.”
