LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — The Newtowne Players are kicking off the holiday season with a comedic twist on a classic as they present “The Farndale Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Production of A Christmas Carol,” running Nov. 21 through Dec. 14.
The play, written by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr. and loosely based on Charles Dickens’ iconic ghost story, follows a spirited but chaotic amateur theater troupe as they attempt to stage A Christmas Carol with enthusiasm, questionable logistics, and plenty of mishaps.
“What happens when a well-meaning theatre troupe attempts Dickens’ beloved classic with lots of spirit? Get ready to laugh and ho-ho-ho your way through it! Some might say… this show ‘sleighs,’” the Newtowne Players said in a statement promoting the production.
According to the official show description, the Farndale Avenue ladies “mount an assault on classic Dickens” as they portray “a dizzy array of characters from the well known tale (and a few which aren’t),” all while handling audience participation, battling an intrusive PA system, and debuting “two specially-composed songs providing unique, show-stopping opportunities for the ladies to wrap their vocal cords and feet around.”
The production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
