LA PLATA, Md. — When an orchestra teacher at Piccowaxen Middle School submitted a two-week notice in March, Charles County Public Schools faced a sudden gap in music instruction for students in grades 6 through 8. Rather than allowing the program to stall or trying to find a long-term substitute — most likely without specialized training — Timothy Bodamer, content specialist for Fine and Performing Arts, stepped in to lead the program himself, ensuring continuity in both instruction and enrichment.

“He made sure our kids were still learning and playing their instruments, not just filling time with a substitute,” one parent noted with appreciation for Bodamer. “It’s clear he cares for the students.”

In addition to leading instruction for grades 6 through 8, Bodamer’s involvement ensured that the orchestra’s annual field trip to Hersheypark remained on schedule. The trip, a longstanding tradition at Piccowaxen Middle School, provides students with a chance to perform publicly and celebrate their musical growth over the academic year. Students had initially been told the trip might be canceled due to the staffing uncertainty, but that changed once Bodamer committed to supporting the students.

This is not the first time Bodamer has stepped in to ensure students receive uninterrupted music education. He previously took on similar responsibilities during a teacher’s maternity leave at Piccowaxen — a commitment he referenced during the school’s spring concert. Speaking to parents, he shared how rewarding it was to witness the musical growth of students he had first taught as sixth graders, now performing as experienced and confident eighth-grade musicians.

Bodamer’s willingness to step into the classroom reflects his dedication to putting students first, even when it means going beyond his typical responsibilities. His actions ensured the continuity of music instruction and preserved the Hersheypark trip.
