North Point High School’s commencement ceremony was the largest commencement ceremony in the county. The ceremony was held at the gymnasium at North Point High School in Waldorf on Tuesday night, capping off two days of ceremonies.
In all, 2,192 Charles County students graduated, earning $51,966,103 in grants and scholarships. Nearly a quarter of those students, 542 in all, graduated from North Point High School, which is the largest public school in the county. The graduates at North Point range from future construction workers to network engineers and everything in between.
“Shaking the hands of our high school graduates is perhaps the most rewarding part of being a Charles County Commissioner,” Charles County Commissioner Ken Robinson (D: 1st) said about the graduations. “The commencement ceremonies this year once again highlighted what a great public school system we have in the county and why it is paramount that we do all in our power to provide the support needed to ensure that we maintain the good schools we enjoy today.”
The North Point High School Class of 2012’s class song was the hit “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The NPHS Class of 2012 Vice President was Alyssa Sato, who spoke about the year that was, the experience of the school and getting #NPNATION as a trending topic on Twitter.
“Remember the significance of the people who have supported you throughout the past four years; your family, your teachers, your consolers and your friends,” North Point High School President Kimberly Hill said in a farewell statement. “They have guided you to a place where you are ready to step off in to a future of endless possibilities, a future with all of the doors open, a place where you will be able to make your mark on the world. Focus on the good things that you have to offer and use all that you have learned to make a difference in the lives of others.”
The North Point High School Class of 2012 President was Natalie Griffin. Cayley Dymond and Natalie Griffin were both selected as valedictorians. The graduates of North Point High School earned $13,978,586 in scholarships and grants. Most of the graduates will attend colleges across the country, while 41 have enlisted in the military. Some will enter in to the workforce, including Tyler Hill, who has carried on a family tradition and started a racing career by winning the 2011 Allison Legacy Series Championship and races at the legendary Hickory Motor Speedway. His older brother, Timmy, also a North Point graduate, races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Along with being the largest class, North Point High School is the only public school in Charles County to graduate inside Charles County. The other five schools graduate at the larger Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, which is in Prince George’s County. The gymnasium, according to North Point High School staff, can seat 4,500 people in comparison to the 5,800 seat stadium used for the other five commencement ceremonies.
