ย St. Maryโ€™s Sheriffโ€™s Lt. Dan Alioto was off-duty in Lexington Park on Monday night when a car sped through a red light right in front of him at approximately 8 p.m.

ย Lt. Alioto stopped the vehicle, and called for backup after smelling marijuana and seeing the driver and passenger making suspicious movements, he told The Bay Net.

ย As patrol deputies Cpl. Julian Schwab and Deputy James Maguire arrived to assist, the driver got out and fled on foot. Lt. Alioto chased him on Great Mills Road and down Essex Drive.

ย โ€œI was behind him, I could see the gun in his hand and I yelled to the other officers,โ€ Alioto told The Bay Net on Monday night. โ€œWe were fighting in a yard on Essex Street when we recovered the gun.โ€

ย Dep. Maguire assisted in getting the suspect in custody as Cpl. Schwab located and safeguarded the weapon after the man threw it while struggling on the ground with Lt. Alioto.

ย The man, Steven Edward Mouring, 29 of Upper Marlboro, turns out to be a convicted felon, Alioto said.

ย A female passenger fled the vehicle and was not located. A search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of marijuana, related paraphernalia and Ecstasy.

ย Mouring was charged with Possession of CDS, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun, Resisting Arrest and Fleeing and Eluding. He was released on $10,000 bail.

ย โ€œOff duty, or on duty sometimes you just got to do that,โ€ Alioto said. โ€œAs soon as I approached the car I could tell something wasnโ€™t right.โ€
