
CALIFORNIA, Md. – On Tuesday afternoon, May 27, 2025, emergency crews responded to a serious two-vehicle crash on St. Andrews Church Road near Benswood Road, where multiple callers reported a head-on collision.
First responders arrived around 2:54 p.m. to find both vehicles off the roadway with injured occupants. Emergency medical services evaluated several patients at the scene.
One individual was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital by ambulance. A second patient, a 38-year-old man, was taken to the hangar to meet Maryland State Police Trooper 7 for medevac transport to UM Capital Regional Trauma Center.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office advises motorists to avoid the area due to current traffic congestion. The crash is expected to cause backups and detours along St. Andrews Church Road and Benswood Road for the next several hours.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
