motor vehicle accident in southern maryland

LA PLATA, Md. — One person was injured Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2025, when a car collided with a school bus near the College of Southern Maryland campus in La Plata, prompting a mass casualty response.

The crash occurred just after 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Mitchell Road and South Campus Drive. A Ford Focus reportedly pulled out in front of the school bus and was struck on the side. The car’s driver, a woman, was initially unable to exit the vehicle but was later freed without requiring extrication.

Charles County emergency responders evaluated two individuals from both vehicles for injuries. Neither required transport by ambulance, but one was later taken to UM Charles Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

School officials confirmed that only one student was aboard bus #363 at the time of the crash. No student injuries were reported, and the bus was deemed driveable following the incident.

The Charles County Board of Education dispatched a representative to the scene as a precaution.

Police continue to investigate the collision.
