
Leonardtown, MD – Leonardtownโs Annual Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, November 11 at 10 a.m. Participants will assemble at St. Maryโs Ryken High School and will march down Fenwick Street to Washington Street and then continue through the square in beautiful, downtown Leonardtown. The St. Maryโs County Fairgrounds as well as the St. Maryโs County Governmental Center will provide free parking and free shuttle service. Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance will sponsor a contra dance, Saturday, Nov 11 at Christ Church Parish Hall in Chaptico. Ann Fallon will be calling the dance, and music will be provided by the Southern Maryland Open Band.ย Doors open at 7 p.m.; dancing begins at 7:30. Beginners are encouraged to arrive at 7:00 for the dance workshop.ย Admission is $10 for non-SMTMD members; $6 for members (band members are admitted free of charge). Contra is a traditional American style of social dance and provides good fun and exercise for the entire family! . An Ice Cream Social will also be held during the evening. The COSMIC Symphony has announced the schedule for its 22nd Season. The Chamber Orchestra of Southern Maryland, In Concert is under the music direction of Vladimir Lande. Current symphony openings are in the string sections and in the flute choir. The Opening Concert will be held on Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m. in the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum in Lexington Park, Maryland. The concert will be repeated on Sunday, November 12 at 4 p.m. at the Crossroad Church located in St. Leonard, Maryland.ย Both of these concerts will feature music by Rachmaninoff, Sibelius and Weinberg. The Holiday Concert will be held on Sunday, December 3 at 2 p.m. at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Maryland and will feature the Abigail Francisco School of Classical Ballet and stars from American National Ballet. The Family Concerts will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 4 p.m. at Patuxent Presbyterian Church in California, Maryland and on Sunday, March 11 at 4 p.m. at the St. John Vianney Family Life Center in Prince Frederick, Maryland and will feature the winners of COSMICโs 14th Annual Young Artist Competition.
The seasonโs Finale concerts of Porgy and Bess will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the Patuxent Presbyterian Church in California, Maryland and on Sunday, May 20 at 4 pm. at the College of Southern Maryland in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
News From Historic St. Mary’s City
The Historic St. Mary’s City Lecture Series presents: Home Grown: Building a Period Native House From Scratch on Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m. in the Visitor Center Auditorium on Rosecroft Road. This lecture is free and open to the public. John Samuel Pratt, Site Supervisor of the HSMC Woodland Indian Hamlet, and Nate Salzman, Village Manager at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, will share their knowledge of how to build a structure from the ground up.
Congratulations to local historian and HSMC Museum Guide Pete Himmelheber who will be leading his 900th tour on November 14. He has been volunteering at the Museum for the past 20 years.On anyhow given day, Mr. Himmelheber can be found as a Museum Guide, as an historical interpreter, or helping to mend the Museum’s landscape fences or ghost frame structures. He has marked each tour on his tobacco/walking stick. HSMC is a museum of living history and archaeology on the site of Maryland’s first capital in beautiful, tidewater Southern Maryland.
