LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Patuxent Habitat for Humanity celebrated the dedication of its 22nd home build on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, welcoming LaToya Carroll and her daughter, Callie, into their new residence in Lexington Park.

The event marked the culmination of months of effort by local businesses, volunteers, and community members who came together to build the three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom home.

The home, built by W.M. Davis Inc., was supported by sponsors including Jerry Lewis Roofing, Barron’s Lumber, C & C Plumbing and Septic, KING Electric, B&D Siteworks, Hilltop Signs and Graphics, and the St. Mary’s County commissioners.

Catherine Shipman, executive director of Patuxent Habitat for Humanity, expressed her gratitude for the collective efforts that made the project possible.

“We’re happy and blessed and thankful that we’re able to give her a home to live in,” Shipman said. “I’m excited and happy that she’s got the home, so really thrilled for her. I’m looking forward to working with the next family.”

Carroll and her daughter were chosen through Habitat’s application process, which includes financial screenings and home visits by a selection committee.

“We held a workshop in October of 2023,” Shipman explained. “We did two sessions and combined, we had 60 applicants. Once we gather all their financial information, we send it to somebody separate to review their debt-to-income information. After that, there’s a family home selection committee that goes out and interviews the families.”

The committee then presents a shortlist of candidates to the board, which makes the final decision.

Patuxent Habitat for Humanity builds one home per year for a local family in need and is actively seeking land for future projects. The organization also welcomes volunteers of all skill levels to assist with construction, renovations, and fundraising.

“Anybody can help out,” Shipman said. “Say if you had no handyman skills, we will help you on that. We’ll help you become a handy person. You can learn on the site.”

She encouraged those interested in volunteering to reach out via email at info@patuxenthabitat.org or check opportunities on JustServed.org.

Patuxent Habitat for Humanity plans to announce its next build location by spring. More information about the organization and its programs is available at patuxenthabitat.org.
