Each year, the Sheriff’s Office raises money to purchase new bicycles from Bike Doctor, whose employees order and assemble the bicycles at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office. A few days before Christmas, community policing officers deliver the bicycles and a new helmet to the unsuspecting children — or to parents who want to keep the surprise a secret until Christmas morning. The recipients are selected based on nominations submitted by community members to their community policing officer or the child’s school resource officer.
“Together with the Bike Doctor and our kind and generous community, we’ve helped hundreds of parents fulfill their child’s wish for a bicycle under the Christmas tree,” said Sheriff Rex Coffey. “I know our country is facing tough economic times and Charles County is no exception. Still, any citizens who can spare any donation no matter how small will help ensure the continued success of this very special program.”
Citizens who would like to contribute to the holiday bicycle giveaway fund are asked to contact Officer Sheilagh Fulton of the Community Services Section at (301) 932-3052 or fultons@ccso.us.Checks should be made payable to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and “Bicycle Donation Fund” should be indicated in the memo section.
