GREAT MILLS, Md. – After two and a half months of games, the Great Mills High School Hornets have secured a perfect 10-0 record. The junior varsity football team won every game they played this season. JV football head coach Rashad Goldring partially attributes the success to the fact that a number of the players have been playing since they were young in 7 & Under (7U) or 8 & Under (8U) leagues. On the JV team, Josh Brooks, Raekwan Carroll, Jae’veon Medley, and Joseph Swales are among the most seasoned athletes.
“These guys have been playing together for a long time, since they were little,” Goldring said. “That experience and teamwork is definitely a big help on the field.”
Goldring is also the head outdoor track and field coach at Great Mills High School. He played football in high school and ran track in college.
“I’m a former athlete, and I played at Great Mills as a student,” Goldring said. “I know the game, and I know how it’s played. That gives me a different perspective that I can share with the team.”
The perfect season was nearly ended on Sept. 23, when the Hornets faced the North Point Eagles at home. The game went into overtime.
“Last year against North Point, we went into overtime, too,” Goldring said. “This year, the team was hyped. I think this is the first time we’ve beaten North Point since my sophomore year [of high school.]”
The game against North Point was the closest game the Hornets had this season, with a final score of 8-6 and another victory for Great Mills. The season ended with the Hornets scoring insurmountable points against their competition in their last few games: 26-0 against the Calvert Cavaliers, 44-0 against the Chopticon Braves, and 54-6 against the Lackey Chargers.
The JV team’s success has motivated and excited the varsity team, Goldring said.
“We had a good season. We’re going to have a party at our sports banquet. The varsity team is on a five-game winning streak. The JV team has sparked a fire in that team,” Goldring said. “The kids have been amazing. We’re going to the playoffs, and the varsity team is playing this Friday at North Point.”
The varsity football team will play at North Point High School in Waldorf at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.

So proud of Rashad leading this team to an undefeated season (which is extremely difficult to accomplish in this conference !), well done. I coached Rashad for his 2 seasons on the JV team and currently with him on the GM staff. This was an exciting group that hopefully can continue the success going forward.
