At 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Lamart Carter Jr., 54 of Cheltenham, sustained injuries in a two crash at the intersection of Routes 234 and 238 that claimed his life shortly after.
Volunteer firefighters and rescue workers arrived on the scene that morning in Chaptico to find a T-bone crash involving Carterโs station wagon and a full-sized pickup truck driven by Benjamin Guy, of Clements.
Carter was driving north on Rt. 238 and apparently proceeded through the blinking red light into the path of Guyโs pickup.
The St. Maryโs County Sheriffโs Office has yet to release any information about this crash.
Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Raley reports volunteer crews quickly went to work on freeing Carter from his vehicle, folding back both doors on the driverโs side to free him.
A helicopter was called in for transport to a trauma center, but medics on the scene determined the driverโs condition was critical and he was rushed to St. Maryโs Hospital, as Mechanicsville rescue squad members and firefighters continued to administer CPR.
Carter later succumbed to his injuries.
