LUSBY, Md. – A 21-year-old man who allegedly attempted to strike vehicles with a hammer on Route 4 was subdued by law enforcement Tuesday evening after a brief confrontation that forced officers to deploy a Taser.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m. on July 22, 2025, a trooper from the Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack was dispatched to the area of Flag Ponds Parkway in response to reports of a man running in the travel lanes and swinging a hammer at passing cars.
Upon arrival, the trooper located the man in the median, involved in an altercation with two adults later identified as his parents. The trooper attempted verbal de-escalation and ordered the man to drop the weapon. The man refused to comply and advanced toward the trooper while still holding the hammer.

After several warnings, the trooper deployed his agency-issued Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The man pulled the prongs from his body and ran into the active lanes of Route 4.
Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, already on scene, gave chase and were able to take the man into custody. Authorities say charges are pending, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. His name has not yet been released.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
In accordance with Maryland State Police policy (OPS 10.04), a comprehensive administrative review of the use of force is being conducted to ensure compliance with department standards.
