PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. โ A 36-year-old Prince Frederick man was arrested Sept. 11 on multiple drug distribution charges after allegedly selling prescription Alprazolam pills to a known drug user in a Fairground Road parking lot. Tevon Anthony Middleton posted $5,000 bond following his arrest on felony charges that carry potential sentences exceeding two decades in prison, according to court records.
Charging documents filed by the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office state that Deputy N. Buckler was on patrol around 2:50 p.m. when he observed a suspected drug transaction at 300 Fairground Road in Prince Frederick. Buckler reported recognizing both individuals from prior controlled substance investigations.
The deputy wrote that a man walked toward the parking lot as a gray GMC Yukon with Virginia registration pulled into a space. The pedestrian approached the driverโs window and began interacting with Middleton. Based on his training and experience, Buckler reported the encounter appeared consistent with a hand-to-hand drug transaction.
The Yukon allegedly left about five minutes later and drove to a 7-Eleven parking lot on Church Street. According to the deputy, drug distributors sometimes make such stops to check whether they are being followed, a tactic referred to by officers as โcleaning yourself.โ The vehicle stayed at the convenience store for about two minutes before continuing south on Route 4.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for a registration violation, according to charging documents. When Middleton was reportedly requested to exit the vehicle, he complied. Detective First Class Crum allegedly utilized drug detection canine Zeus to conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert.
A probable cause search of the vehicle yielded evidence of drug activity, court records detail. Officers reportedly discovered a prescription bottle for Alprazolam containing three round peach pills in the center console, along with three twenty-dollar bills and a black smartphone. Authorities assert that additional evidence included a plastic container with white residue located on the rear passenger floorboard.
Court documents show the prescription had been filled earlier that day for 60 pills, with directions to take two daily. Investigators wrote that the bottle should have contained 58 pills but was short 55, a discrepancy they said is consistent with distribution of prescribed medication.
Middleton allegedly waived his Miranda rights and initially claimed he left the remaining pills at home. When confronted about the observed transaction, Middleton reportedly admitted to giving the other individual several Alprazolam pills. Court records show Middleton was then transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.
Additional contraband was allegedly found during booking at the Calvert County Detention Center. Corrections staff reported locating a plastic container with residue and a plastic straw concealed on Middletonโs person. Police said such items are often used to ingest controlled substances.
Middleton faces multiple charges, including distribution of controlled dangerous substances and possession with intent to distribute, both of which carry maximum penalties of 20 years in prison under Maryland law. He is also charged with possession of contraband in a place of confinement, punishable by up to three years, and drug possession and paraphernalia charges that carry maximum penalties of four years and one year, respectively.
Court records show Middleton is represented by the Calvert County Public Defenderโs Office. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7 in Calvert County District Court.
Deputy Buckler investigated the case for the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office. Evidence has been sent to the Maryland State Police Laboratory for testing. The Calvert County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office is prosecuting the case.
