Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

Barstow, MD – At approximately 1:52 p.m. a tractor trailer with a load of water, driven by James Bryan of Lexington Park, was traveling eastbound on Maryland Route 231 in the area of Barstow Road.  At the same time a 2016 GMC, driven by Patricia Mento of Waldorf, was traveling westbound on Maryland Route 231 when it crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck the tractor trailer. The GMC came to rest on the right side of the west bound lane and the tractor trailer left the roadway into the parking lot of Home Place Hair Studio. The tractor trailer struck three vehicles in the parking lot, one of which was occupied by Kelly Roth of Huntingtown.  The tractor trailer then rolled over and came to rest just east of Home Place Hair Studio. Bryan was flown by Trooper 7 to PG Shock Trauma. Ms. Mento and a 4 year old child were treated on the scene and released. Ms. Roth was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The accident is still under investigation and charges are pending.


UPDATE 5:23 p.m.

Barstow, MD – On Tuesday, May 23 shortly after 1 p.m. a vehicle traveling on Route 231 crossed the center line just as a tractor trailer was traveling in the opposite direction. Reports from the scene indicated the driver of the tractor trailer took evasive action. While the vehicle that reportedly crossed the line was only clipped, the tractor ran off the road, flipped and damaged several parked vehicles. The tractor trailer driver was flown to a regional hospital with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported. 

The crash remains under investigation. and traffic in the Prince Frederick-Barstow area remains impacted, however the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office reported at 5:30 p.m. that Route 231 Prince Frederick is now open in both directions.

UPDATE 2:16 pm- Per Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, westbound traffic is now moving on Route 231.

UPDATE 1:48 pm- HAZMAT crew is en route to the scene for hydraulic fluid leaking from Tractor trailer involved in the accident.

It is reported that Route 231 between Stafford Road and Hallowing Point Road will be closed for an extended period of time. 

UPDATE 1:40 pm- According to units on the scene the patient has been extricated from the vehicle and Trooper 7(MEDEVAC) is en route. Landing Zone for Trooper 7 will be in the area of the Fairgrounds. 

Expect delays and find alternate routes if possible.


Prince Frederick, MD 1:33 pm- Calvert County Sheriff’s office has shut down Route 231 in the area of Stafford Road due to a serious motor vehicle accident.


Use caution in the area, expect delays and watch for emergency crews.
