A public hearing will be held on Benedict Revitalization Plan on Tuesday, November 29th at 6pm EST. ย There have been concerns about a resort hotel or condos being built, but the Commissioners felt those fears were eliminated. ย The Planning Commission sent the plan to the Charles County Commissioners on August after previous public hearings on the matter drew scrutiny.
ย
When bringing the matter up, the planning commission had concerns about the effects on traffic on MD-231. ย They determined there was no need for a new light to be installed. ย Also, a change in the zoning from a Limited Development Zone to an Intense Development Zone opens the door to expanded development as it would allow more density. ย The commission felt it would not actually lead to more density.
ย
Shortly after, a motion was approved to apply for a War of 1812 Capital Grant. ย The grant would be for $250,000 with the county matching the funds. ย Those funds would go to Benedict revitalization. ย Benedict has great historical significance in relation to the War of 1812. ย Benedict is where the British landed on August 18, 1814. ย The British then started their march towards Washington, DC and, later, Baltimore.
ย
All this comes as the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 approaches.
