Leonardtown, MD – During a lengthy tenure as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, Mechanicsville resident John F. Wood Jr. always hosted a well-attended event to raise campaign funds. Although he decided not to seek re-election in 2014 and has been out of politics for four years, Citizen Johnny Wood is still hosting the popular event. On Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, the Friends of John F. Wood Jr. Charity Bull Roast was held on the grounds of Olde Breton Inn.
Despite the monsoon conditions, the faithful came and gathered under a large tent, not to hear long-winded political speeches—although political figures from both parties were there—but for some good old Southern Maryland comfort food. Attendees enjoyed huge plates of barbecued pork, roast beef and fried chicken plus ice cream, cookies and brownies for dessert.
Four local charities will benefit from the bull roast. They are Christmas in April St. Mary’s County Inc., A Community That Shares (ACTS), St. Mary’s County Juvenile and Adult Drug Court, and Friends of Cedar Lane Wish List Program. According to the event program, a committee selected this year’s four charities.
Among the attendees of this year’s event was Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford, who briefly addressed his crowd, stating that despite the heavy rain he was happy to be back in St. Mary’s County.
