The demolition of a familiar Prince Frederick landmark will move a step closer to happening Tuesday, Dec. 20 when the Calvert County Commissioners meet for the final time in 2011.

The Department of Finance and Budget’s Purchasing Office is recommending the commissioners award a $252,221 contract to Sun Demolition LLC of Beltsville for the purpose of razing the two-story building on Route 2/4 which once served as Calvert County High School. For several years prior to the start of the 2010-2011 school year, the building, which was built in the late 1940s, was Calvert Middle School (CMS). A brand-new CMS is now located at a site behind Fox Run Shopping Center.

“The purpose of this contract is to furnish all labor, material, supervision and equipment necessary for the demolition of the county-owned former Calvert Middle School,” stated purchasing officer Roberta Baker in a memo to the commissioners.

Baker reported 12 bids were received and opened two weeks ago and Sun Demolition LLC’s bid was the lowest one submitted. Four Calvert County businesses submitted bids for the demolition project.

Money is budgeted for the razing project and the commissioners will vote on the contract award during their regular weekly meeting.

No information is available on when the razing project will take place.
