The Board of Education will hold a public hearing on redistricting on Thursday, January 20, 2011, 6:00 p.m., in the Board of Education meeting room located in the Central Administration Building located at 23160 Moakley Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650.
Dr. Michael Martirano, superintendent of schools, appointed a redistricting committee as outlined in policy JCAA to review options and provide a recommendation on relieving the overcrowding at Leonardtown High School by utilizing the available capacity at Chopticon High School.
The recommendation, as well as other plans the committee considered, were presented to the Board of Education on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The recommendation to the Board is to implement Plan 1 with grandfathering for current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who will be 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students during the 2011-2012 school year, with hub transportation. Hub transportation is different from regular transportation in that a bus will only stop at a few designated locations, and not at regular bus stops. Students within the redistricted zone may meet the bus at one of the three designated locations for transportation to Leonardtown High School. Students who are in the 8th grade this year and fall under this redistricting proposal will attend Chopticon High School in the 2011-2012 school year.
• Rt. 234 and Big Chestnut Road (68 students)
o Point Lookout Road from Loveville Road to Budds Creek Road. Budds Creek Road from Point Lookout Road to Colton Point Road including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes. Bayside Road from Big Chestnut Road to Budds Creek Road including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes.
• Bayside Road and Newtowne Neck Road at Rosebank Road to end (60 students)
o Bayside Road from Big Chestnut Road including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes and Newtowne Neck Road from Rosebank Road to the end including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes.
• Loveville Road (14 students)
o Loveville Road and all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes excluding Parsons Mill Road and Bishop Road.
• Friendship School Road and Bishop Road (5 students)
o Bishop Road and Friendship School Road from Bishop Road to Maypole Road including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes.
• Maypole Road and Parsons Mill Road (7 students)
o Parsons Mill Road and Maypole Road including all auxiliary roads, courts, drives, and lanes excluding Friendship School Road. Route 5 from Maypole Road to Budds Creek Road.
