ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team suffered their first loss of 2024 Friday evening (Feb. 23). St. Mary’s College (1-1) came out on the short end of a 13-9 non-conference loss to Randolph-Macon College (3-0) despite a career-high 17 saves by junior goalie Cullen McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana).

How It Happened

  • First-year defensive midfielder Will Hock (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) went coast-to-coast to notch his first collegiate goal and gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 11:25. After Randolph-Macon knotted the game at 1-all, first-year Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) found sophomore attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) for a 2-1 SMCM advantage at 4:52.
  • The Yellow Jackets pulled even once again less than a minute later before St. Mary’s College headed into the second quarter with a 4-2 margin behind a pair of unassisted goals from junior midfielder Nate Hochrein (Towson, Md./Towson) and sophomore defensive midfielder Nick Machiran (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron).
  • Randolph-Macon controlled the second frame, scoring four straight to claim its first lead of the game, 6-4, with 5:25 remaining in the half. Avery Tankersley scored twice while Matthew Sutty handed out a pair of assists. The Seahawks got one back off the stick of junior attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to head into halftime down 6-5.
  • Preis struck again just 36 seconds into the third to tie the contest for the fourth time.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded by rattling off three in a row, including back-to-back goals from Tankersley, before Hochrein stopped the run with his second of the game and pulled SMCM within two.
  • R-MC strung together another 4-0 run to open the fourth quarter and triple its advantage to a six-goal cushion with 6:44 remaining in the game.

Inside the Box Score

  • SMCM’s man-down defense played well, effectively killing off all four Yellow Jacket extra-man opportunities.
  • Randolph-Macon outshot the Seahawks, 50-28, and posted a 37-22 margin in ground balls behind a game-high eight ground balls each from Brodie Kent and Carson Mingo.
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied 15 face-off wins as Mingo went 14-of-23 at the X.

St. Mary’s College Game Notes

  • Hochrein, Preis, and sophomore attackman Ryan Roth (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) all scored twice to lead the Seahawks.
  • Senior defenseman Brandon Dabkowski (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) scooped up a team-best four ground balls while going 4-for-6 in face-offs.

Randolph-Macon Game Notes

  • Tonight’s victory marks the second in a row for the Yellow Jackets over St. Mary’s College, but SMCM is in front in the all-time series, 17-11.
  • Tankersley finished the game with five goals while JT Harvey registered a hat trick with three.
