HOLLYWOOD, Md.— A large fire swept through a commercial used auto part facility in St. Mary’s County on Jan. 17, 2026, destroying dozens of vehicles and prompting a second alarm as flames spread and threatened nearby woods.

The fire was reported shortly before 4 p.m. at the 43900 block of Commerce Avenue. Callers described heavy black smoke and repeated explosive sounds as multiple vehicles burned in an outdoor storage area.

Fire officials said the blaze quickly intensified, spreading through racks of vehicles and ultimately involving an estimated 30 cars. Due to the volume of smoke and hazardous conditions inside the yard, firefighters were required to operate using breathing apparatus.

As the fire grew, additional resources were requested, including ARFF apparatus from Naval Air Station Patuxent River and specialized equipment to assist with suppression. Officials said flames began advancing toward wooded areas adjacent to the property, raising concerns about further spread.

Numerous engines, tankers, rescue units and command staff responded, working to bring the fire under control and protect nearby properties. Multiple fire units remain on scene.

No injuries had been reported as of this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation and details may change as the situation continues to develop.
