WALDORF, Md. – On August 27, theย Charles County Sheriff’s Office family said “see you later” to a very special member of their family and community treasure. Sergeant Gus Proctor, #238, is retiring after more than 30 years of dedicated service to Charles County.

Sgt. Proctor began his career in 1991 as a Correctional Officer. He transferred to Police in 1994 and went on to serve in the Patrol Division, Narcotics Enforcement Section, Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and finally as the Administrative Sergeant for the Patrol Division. He also served as a member of the Agency’s Emergency Services Team (EST) and as a Field Training Officer.

In 2006, Sgt. Proctor became the Agency Coordinator and Liaison for the Charles County Maryland Special Olympics Torch Run. Over the last 15 years, he has grown this program from 50 participants to over 800 participants and has raised over $700,000. He has also served as the Southern Region Coordinator with the Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Council for nearly 8 years. Gus says that his proudest accomplishment has been the strong partnerships he has been able to build within our community in order to support Special Olympics, an important cause that is so special to him.

Sgt. Proctor’s most memorable moment was when he represented Special Olympics Maryland at the 2018 Final Leg Torch Run/Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle Washington, and I got to lead Team Special Olympics Maryland, into Husky Stadium for the Opening Ceremonies.

Along with many commendations and letters of appreciation, Sgt. Proctor was recognized for his life saving efforts in 1998, when he and several other officers rescued 65 people from balconies during an apartment fire. In May of 2018, he received an award from the Maryland Special Olympics for his years of dedication to the Charles County Special Olympics. In 2020, Sgt. Proctor received the American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for outstanding community service.ย

Fortunately for all of us, we don’t have to say good-bye to Sgt. Proctor just yet, as he is rejoining the Agency as the Community Organizer. He says “I am not ready to call it quits with serving this awesome community here in Charles County.”

Gus, thank you for an amazing career filled with service, dedication, loyalty, and excellence! We’re so glad you’re part of our family, and we’re proud of your service.
