Serious Multi-Vehicle Head-On Collision Involving Ambulance On Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge

SOLOMONS, Md. — A serious crash involving an ambulance shut down the Thomas Johnson Bridge Wednesday after a pickup truck struck the emergency vehicle head-on, leaving multiple people injured.

The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on March 4, 2026, as a Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department ambulance was responding toward St. Mary’s County.

According to emergency communications, 911 centers were simultaneously receiving reports of a black Ford F-150 driving erratically across the bridge. Moments later, dispatchers were advised that the pickup had collided head-on with the ambulance.

Multiple first responders were dispatched to the scene for reports of entrapment. The operator of the pickup truck was trapped inside the vehicle. One emergency medical services provider and the ambulance operator reported injuries. The driver of the pickup was transported to a local hospital.

The Thomas Johnson Bridge was closed in both directions as crews worked to treat the injured and clear the wreckage, causing significant traffic disruptions in the Solomons area.

Police are investigating the crash.

  2. This will continue to happen and get much worse as there is zero police presence in this area

  3. I understand your frustration, but in this case the driver experienced a medical emergency and unintentionally hit the ambulance. Emergency responders are trained and prepared for situations like this, and removing a vehicle from service is never caused by someone acting on purpose. Accidents related to medical issues are exactly why emergency services exist in the first place. I hope everyone involved is okay and receiving the care they need. Peace.
