SOUTHERN MARYLAND — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning on July 9, 2026, for parts of Southern Maryland, with damaging wind gusts, lightning and torrential rainfall possible.

The warning is in effect until 7:15 p.m. for northern St. Mary’s County, southern Calvert County, southeastern Prince George’s County and east-central Charles County.

At 6:09 p.m., the severe thunderstorm was located near Golden Beach, or near Hallowing Point, and was moving east at 25 mph.

The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph. The National Weather Service reported the storm was radar indicated.

Damaging winds could knock down trees and large branches, block roadways, damage homes and vehicles, and cause localized power outages. Unsecured light objects may also become projectiles.

Locations in the warning area include Lexington Park, Chesapeake Ranch Estates, Prince Frederick, Cuckold Creek, Sheridan Point, Calvert Cliffs, Greenwell State Park, Hallowing Point, Saint Leonard Creek, Town Creek, Flag Harbor, California, Golden Beach, Lusby, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Saint Leonard, Hollywood, Drum Point, Hughesville and Long Beach.

The National Weather Service advised residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Large hail, damaging winds and continuous cloud-to-ground lightning are occurring with the storm. Residents should move indoors immediately. Torrential rainfall may also lead to flash flooding, and drivers should not attempt to travel through flooded roadways.

Additional warnings or updates may be issued as the storm moves through the region.
