La Plata, MD – A mid-morning fire damaged a detached, wood-framed shed in Charles County Thursday, Aug. 31, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze on Oliver Shop Road in La Plata was discovered by a neighbor shortly after 9 a.m.

โ€œThe fire occurred in the interior of the shed as a result of a malfunction of a gas-powered log splitter,โ€ a deputy fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œAn adjacent storage shed also sustained minor exterior fire damage.โ€

Thirty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 35 minutes. There were no injuries. Damage is estimated at $15,000.
