La Plata, MD – A mid-morning fire damaged a detached, wood-framed shed in Charles County Thursday, Aug. 31, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Oliver Shop Road in La Plata was discovered by a neighbor shortly after 9 a.m.
“The fire occurred in the interior of the shed as a result of a malfunction of a gas-powered log splitter,” a deputy fire marshal’s report stated. “An adjacent storage shed also sustained minor exterior fire damage.”
Thirty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 35 minutes. There were no injuries. Damage is estimated at $15,000.
