On September 10th, 2005, Sheriff Zylak was sworn in as President of the Maryland Sheriffsโ€™ Institute (MSI).ย  MSI is a charitable arm of the Maryland Sheriffsโ€™ Association (MSA) with approximately 4,500 Honorary Members throughout the state.ย  Honorary Members pay dues of $20 per year and may also contribute to special appeals.ย  In addition to the administrative expenses, the funds go to scholarships for deserving Maryland students chosen each year by individual sheriffโ€™s offices, and training for sheriffs and deputies.

ย

In the eight (8) years since the MSI was founded, more than $115,000 in scholarships have been awarded.ย  Training varies to include but not limited to weapons of mass destruction, canine training, homicide investigations, and interrogation techniques.

MSI publishes a periodic newsletter, On Patrol, for its Honorary Members with information on scholarship recipients, recent training classes, and public safety tips (internet scams and identity theft awareness).
