PORT REPUBLIC, Md. – Calvert County emergency crews responded Sunday evening to a report of a motor vehicle collision with a telephone pole and injuries in the 2600 block of Scientists Cliffs Road in Port Republic.

The call was received at 5:54 p.m. on June 28, through the vehicle’s telematics alert, reporting an auto accident involving a sedan with two occupants that hit a telephone pole. Airbags were deployed, and the vehicle was reported to be on fire. It was not known whether anyone was trapped or whether the fire posed a threat to nearby structures.

Units dispatched with initial information indicated the vehicle was not blocking traffic, not on fire and the occupants reportedly moved to a safe location before responders arrived.

No major injuries were reported, one occupant signed a refusal of treatment. Crews are staying on scene for Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative to assess the powerlines that are touching trees, which were smoking, and damage to the telephone pole.

This incident remains under review.
