HUGHESVILLE, Md. – The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, a division of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, is celebrating Maryland Horse Month with a re-launch of the Southern Maryland Horse Extra – a comprehensive online guide that connects consumers with the horse industry in Southern Maryland (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s, and St. Mary’s).

Governor Larry Hogan proclaimed October as Maryland Horse Month, recognizing the abundant historic, recreational, therapeutic, and economic contributions made by the state’s horse industry. Horses are an important aspect of Southern Maryland’s agricultural heritage and there are numerous barns, trails and facilities throughout the region.

SMADC’s interactive Horse Extra showcases more than 50 horse barns and facilities region-wide offering riding lessons, horse-boarding, training, sales, and breeding. Plus listings of support services for horses and their owners including area hay and feed suppliers, tack shops, farriers, vets, horse rescue and care facilities, riding clubs, equine organizations and a section dedicated to state and county park trails systems that welcome equestrians.

“Fall is a great time to discover the world of horses in Southern Maryland,” said Susan McQuilkin, SMADC Marketing Executive. “We are fortunate to have an amazing variety of horse stables to choose from offering riding lessons and activities for all ages and abilities in every riding discipline, and Southern Maryland is also home to 14 certified Maryland Horse Discovery Centers where visitors can interact with horses in a safe and friendly environment – no riding experience needed!”  The Southern Maryland Horse Extra interactive searchable guide is available now to view on the SMADC ‘Get our Guides‘ page at SMADC.com.

SMADC is now inviting all regional horse enterprises and business to review and update their listings and welcomes new equine-related businesses to apply to featured in the interactive guide. Listings are free. To update or submit a listing visit the ‘News’ page on SMADC.com.
