Hollywood, MD โ€“ Retailer Toys R Us announced March 14 that it plans to close or sell all 800 of its stores in the United States. Shuttering of the chain, which first opened in the 1960s, will affect as many as 33,000 jobs, media reports indicated.

Toys R Us has several locations in Maryland, including a store in Waldorfโ€™s St. Charles Towne Center Mall, Clinton and Annapolis.
Last fall Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy and was reportedly $8 billion in debt. According to a report in the Washington Post, company officials have told store employees that the locations will not be closed all at once but would occur over time.

Toys R Us will also close its 100 stores in the United Kingdom.
