LEONARDTOWN, Md. — After going out on 408 missions in 2020, the Southern Maryland Section of the Maryland State Police’s helicopter sections is considered to be the busiest in the state.

They primarily serve St. Mary’s County and parts of Calvert and Charles County, however their unique position in Maryland allows them to also serve as backup for missions on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, especially in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Smith Island, and Tangier Island.

Trooper 7, which is the last of the current helicopter sections in the state, is based out of St. Mary’s Airport in Hollywood, Maryland.
