The holiday season is the time when most people think about helping those less fortunate. That is evident at street corners and shopping centers all over the area. However, there are organizations that work to help the needy all year round; working tirelessly and for the most part silently helping hundreds.
One such organization is St. Maryโs Caring Soup Kitchen located at 20850 Langley Rd. in Lexington Park. The not-for-profit is open every Monday through Saturday providing breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. No one is ever turned away and anyone that needs a quality meal is welcomed.
The year, SMCSK was fortunate in that they were the recipients of a Federal grant to help with funding. However, the grant came with the stipulation that all the money had to be spent before the year came to a close. After discussions it was determined that there was going to be $3400 remaining unless SMCSK figured out a way to spend the money.
They decided to provide 100 Thanksgiving gift baskets to those that applied via the organizations web site, www.stmaryscaring.org. A few days before the holiday, SMCSK passed out the baskets filled with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The organization is always looking for the generosity of the community to keep funding going. Those that are interested should call (301) 863-5700 or contact them via email at stmcaring@gmail.com.
