
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Women’s Soccer Team (17-2-4) kicked off the first round of the NCAA tournament with a matchup against Vassar College (12-3-5). The Seahawks fell to the Brewers 1-0.
How it Happened
- Vassar held the edge in shots over St. Mary’s at the halftime intermission. The Brewers took nine shots and put three on goal, while the Seahawks took two shots and did not put one on goal.
- Ashlyn Bonner hit the post with a shot just five minutes into the game, which proved to be the best scoring opportunity of the half for St. Mary’s. Megan Rusk took the other shot for the Seahawks.
- Kyleigh Bland made three first half saves.
- The Brewers scored the first goal of the game just one minute into the second half.
- Flor Katz-Starr almost had the equalizer in the 50th minute, but saw her shot get turned away by the Vassar goalkeeper.
- The Seahawks kept the game within striking distance thanks to strong defensive and goalkeeping play. Kyleigh Bland finished the game with seven saves, but another scoring opportunity never materialized for the Seahawks. St. Mary’s ended the game falling 1-0.
