LEONARDTOWN, Md. — All businesses checked in October alcohol compliance operations passed ID checks, but St. Mary’s County law enforcement still recorded 15 DUI arrests during the month, the county’s alcohol enforcement coordinator told the Alcohol Beverage Board on Thursday.

Deputy Steve Myers said the sheriff’s office focused recent compliance checks on restaurants and a few liquor stores that had drawn complaints, and “all passed,” with staff consistently requesting IDs and challenging underage attempts.

“It’s the first time in a long time we’ve had everyone pass,” Myers told the board, adding that regular training and monthly checks appear to be working.

Despite that, Myers said deputies and Maryland State Police together recorded 24 DUI arrests in October — 15 by the sheriff’s office and nine by state troopers. Many of the cases stemmed from officer observations and single-vehicle crashes that occurred between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., he said.

The arrested drivers ranged in age from early 20s to early 70s and were roughly split between men and women, Myers said, underscoring that impaired driving remains a risk across age groups.

Myers urged residents to plan ahead, use designated drivers and avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking, noting that specialized traffic initiatives will continue targeting impaired, distracted and aggressive driving.

  1. This sheriff’s office should be concentrating on arresting real criminals, not destroying businesses. They need to be hanging out outside of canopy liquors in Lexington park instead.

    1. Yes fully agree, I don’t care that a business accidentally sold a 20 year old a beer. I care that every week someone is murdered in Lexington Park.

  2. I think we should offer more uber/lyft at the bar for those drinking. Make a deal with the establishment like door dash, grub hub but for drunks to get home safe. Add a meal deal and this is a capitalists dream opportunity. See how innovative we can be together.

  3. Yes omg please clean up Canopy Liquors. What is the police station across the street even used for?
