LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Arts Council (SMCAC) is teaming up with the Port of Leonardtown Winery (POL) for a label design contest to mark the winery’s 15th anniversary of the winery’s tasting room. The collaboration also aims to raise funds for the arts council.
The contest, which is open to artists of all mediums, invites participants to create a label that captures the essence of POL’s unique sparkling red variety, set to be released in May 2025. The winery plans to produce a limited run of 65 cases, and 10% of the bottle sales will be donated to the arts council.
“This collaboration will be the first of an annual design partnership,” SMCAC stated on their website.
Suggested themes for the design include Celebrations, Local Maryland, and Agriculture, but artists are welcome to explore any concept they choose. The label design should be rectangular, though the winery’s graphic designers may crop or modify artwork that doesn’t fit the shape or dimensions of the label.
The deadline to submit designs is January 10, 2025. A team of winery staff and arts council members will select the top three designs based on creativity and originality. These finalists will then be put to a public vote, with First, Second, and Third place winners receiving prizes.
The First Place winner will have the opportunity to sign bottles at the winery’s release celebration and engage with guests. Additional opportunities may include the production of limited edition prints, the sale of original work, and the potential for t-shirt designs, among others.
