LEONARDTOWN, Md. — St. Mary’s County voters took to the polls on Tuesday, June 23, for the primaries to vote on who will be on the ballot for the general election in November.
Aligning with other counties in the state, St. Mary’s County voted in favor of current Maryland House Delegate Adrian Boafo to run in Congressional District 5 to replace Steny Hoyer, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Chris Chafee won the Republican nomination with 58.21% of the vote in St. Mary’s County.
Chuck Borges and Jack Bailey both ran opposed on their tickets for state senator in District 29, which covers St. Mary’s County and parts of Calvert County.
J.W. Abney narrowly defeated Shaara Watts for the Democratic House delegate nomination in District 29C, while Republican incumbent Todd Morgan handily won the Republican primary in that district.
Tom Jarboe won the Republican primary for county commissioner with 43.90% of the vote, defeating Roy H. Alvey and Greg Kolarik, and Sheila Milburn ousted Wendy Smith Rice-Morton in the Democratic primary for District 1 with 72.47% of the vote.
In a closer race for commissioner in District 2, Tom Phelan beat Thomas F. McKay with 57.19% of the vote compared to McKay’s 42.81%. Republican Scott Ostrow also won out over Dawn Zimmerman in District 4 by a sizable margin.
Christy Kelly and Jaymi Sterling successfully ran unopposed as Republicans for treasurer and state’s attorney and will not face Democratic opponents in the general election. Carl Sturgis and Steve A. Hall both ran unopposed for sheriff in their parties and will face each other in the general election.

The Delegate Race for 29C looks like Shaara Waats wins not Abney. That district covers both Calvert and St Mary’s.
