ST MARY’S COUNTY, Md. — A St. Mary’s County resident known only as “Mystery Man” has returned to Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim a second top prize, winning $50,000 on a Lots of Cash scratch-off ticket—years after scoring $100,000 on a previous game.

The Maryland state employee, who has played the Lottery for more than two decades, said he never thought lightning would strike twice. But on July 16, that’s exactly what happened.

“I never thought I’d win another top prize,” he said. “Years later, I’m back again.”

The winning moment came on a whim. After stopping at St. Mary’s Gas Station at 23950 Colton Point Road in Clements, he used a $20 win from previous $1 tickets to buy gas and a $5 Lots of Cash scratch-off. That final ticket revealed the $50,000 prize.

“I lost my breath for a second,” he said, adding that the win instantly reminded him of the “blissful” feeling from his earlier jackpot.

He plans to use the prize money to pay off bills and help family members who’ve fallen behind.

“I’ll definitely keep playing,” he said. “Maybe lightning will strike a third time.”

The retailer, St. Mary’s Gas Station, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Lots of Cash scratch-off launched in June 2024. This is the fifth top prize to be claimed. Three $50,000 top prizes remain unclaimed, along with tens of thousands of prizes between $5 and $5,000.
