NEWBURG, Md. — A fire at a vacant commercial building in Charles County late Saturday has been ruled incendiary, according to an investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 12535 Crain Highway in Newburg at 8:53 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2025 after a passing motorist reported seeing flames inside the 30-by-50-foot structure. Firefighters arrived to find the interior of the building, with flames beginning to spread to nearby brush.
The Newburg Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department led the response, supported by surrounding stations. A total of 46 firefighters battled the fire, bringing it under control in approximately 10 minutes. No injuries were reported, officials said.
Investigators determined the fire originated inside the building and was intentionally set. The structure, owned by Kent Croft, had no fire alarms or sprinkler system in place, and losses were estimated at $500.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Southern Region Office at 410-414-3615.
