Port Republic, MD – The 148th Calvert County Jousting Tournament was held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Christ Church in Port Republic. In addition to the competition in the State of Marylandโ€™s Official Sportโ€”ring joustingโ€”the event included a country supper, bazaar and concerts in the historic Episcopalian Church.

The Maryland Jousting Tournament Association (MJTA) conducted the tournament with equestrian athletes participating in four competitive categoriesโ€”novice, amateur, semi-pro and professional.

According to the event web site, participants attempt to spear three rings that are hanging from arches positioned 30 yards apart on the track. The equestrian athletes in the top three classes are required to complete the course in nine seconds or less.

Upcoming MJTA events include the St. Maryโ€™s County Fair Joust Saturday, Sept. 20 in Leonardtown starting at noon; the Maryland State Jousting Championship at the Anne Arundel Fairgrounds in Crownsville, Saturday morning, Oct. 4; and the National Jousting Championship in Brunswick, MD Saturday morning, Oct. 11.
