Hughesville, MD โ€“ The heavy rains that drenched the Southern Maryland region Wednesday, Sept. 28 were bad enough. Add bolts of lightning into the mix and area responders also had to deal with several power outages.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) crews put in a little overtime getting power restored to customers.

โ€œWe had two feeder interruptions last evening,โ€ said SMECO spokesman Tom Dennison. โ€œOne feeder out of the Golden Beach substation that affected 880 customers was off from 8:35 to 9:39 p.m. The other was a feeder out of our Mutual substation in Calvert County that affected 952 customers from 7:04 to 8:26 p.m. The causes were trees/wind and lightning.โ€

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, SMECOโ€™s coverage area was down to 67 customers without power. The dayโ€™s forecast, however, poses the threat of even more outages.

โ€œThere are more thunderstorms in the forecast for tonight into tomorrow,โ€ said Dennison. โ€œWeโ€™re hopeful that the winds donโ€™t pick up too much because we have had a lot of rainfall that has saturated the ground which makes it more likely that trees will topple over.โ€
