More than 650 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed in the regional Destination ImagiNation competition held Saturday, March 19, at Henry E. Lackey High School. Forty teams advance to the state-level competition on April 2 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
 
Ninety-six teams competed to solve one of five problems in the long-term academic event that challenges students to work together to apply creativity, critical thinking skills and their unique talents. Challenges are separated into three levels of competition: elementary, middle and secondary. Teams that place at the regional event advance to the state tournament.
 
The following Charles County teams advance to the state level after placing at the regional tournament.
 
Winners in the Unidentified Moving Object challenge are:
 
·         Elementary: Malcolm Elementary School, Malcolm Cool Warriors team, first place; Malcolm, Malcolm Imagineers team, second place; William A. Diggs Elementary School, Diggs Sweet and Sassy team, third place; and Mary H. Matula Elementary School, Matula Superstars team, fourth place.
·         Middle: Malcolm Elementary School and John Hanson Middle School, DI Like Donuts team, first place; and Theodore G. Davis Middle School, E.P.I.C. Developers team, second place.
·         High: North Point High School, AC/DI team, first place.
 
The team from Malcolm and Hanson competed at the middle school level because the team was comprised of both elementary and middle school students.
 
Winners in the Spinning a Tale challenge are:
 
·         Elementary: Diggs, Science Stars team, first place; Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School, Dr. Mudd’s Elementary Twirlee Gurls team, second place; and Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, Mitchell Gladiators team, third place.
 
Winners in the Triple Take Road Show challenge are:          
                                               
·         Elementary: Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School, Jenifer Team A, first place; Diggs, Laugh-o-matics team, second place; Diggs, Wondrous Wizards of DI team, third place; Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, fourth place; and Diggs, Traveling Monkeys team, tie for fourth place.
·         Middle: Mitchell and Milton M. Somers Middle School, Megaminds team, first place; St. Peter’s School, Storm Imaginators team, second place; and Davis, Davis Ieinsteins team, third place.
·         High: La Plata High School, first place; and General Smallwood Middle School and Henry E. Lackey High School, second place.
 
The team from Mitchell and Somers competed at the middle school level because the team is comprised of elementary and middle school students. Additionally, the team from Smallwood and Lackey competed at the high school level because the team was comprised of both middle and high school students.
 
Winners in the Mythology Mission challenge are:
 
·         Elementary: William B. Wade Elementary School, Wade E. UnDIniable Wildcats team, first place; Gale-Bailey Elementary School, Team A, second place; St. Mary&rsquo
