ย The event was intended to showcase the STEM Academies and serve as a โshow and tellโ for prospective students entering the program for the 2008-2009 school year.
ย General and application information was made available for the prospective students and their parents.
ย As a follow up to the event, each STEM Academy plans an Open House event to be conducted at their respective school.
ย STEM is an advanced program focusing on a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculum.
ย STEM is able to accomplish their goals in part by fostering a joint initiative with St. Mary’s County Public Schools, the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and local industry.
ย The initiative is one of the first of its kind in Maryland and is considered a stepping stone to the workforce of the future.
ย STEM initiatives are endorsed nationally as part of the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Act (COMPETES) signed by President Bush in August of 2007.
