“We have some very talented students at St. Mary’s College of Maryland,” said Ganz. “We give them a supportive environment in which to find and cultivate their artistic voices, and when they do they have much to say. It’s very exciting for me to watch and listen as they bloom.” Students will play works ranging from etudes of Chopin to sonata movements of Beethoven, from short Baroque works of Bach and Telemann to a modern study by Donald Waxman. “The Waxman piece is particularly evocative. It is called an etude ‘on a three finger accompaniment figure,’ but it also has a descriptive title: “Sad Spin.” I wasn’t familiar with this composer, so this is an example of a student teaching me a thing or two! That’s a common and delightful experience at St. Mary’s College.”
