LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Patriotic pageantry met theatrical flair on Saturday, June 14, as the cast of TARZAN®: The Stage Musical kicked off the St. Mary’s County Flag Day Celebration with rousing performances of the National Anthem and God Bless America.

Marching alongside color guards and veteran groups, the Summerstock performers gave attendees a taste of what’s to come as they prepare to swing into their 43rd season with Disney’s Tarzan, a stage adaptation of the beloved 1999 animated film.

Staged the weekends of July 18–20 and July 25–27 at Chopticon High School, Tarzan tells the story of a boy raised by apes who must navigate two worlds when he encounters human explorers—especially the curious and captivating Jane. With a book by Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang and a pulse-pounding score by Phil Collins, the production features iconic songs like “You’ll Be in My Heart,” “Son of Man,” and “Two Worlds,” plus nine additional songs written for the stage.

Presented through Music Theatre International, this year’s show builds on a legacy of community theatre that began in 1971 with Gypsy. Over the decades, Summerstock has delighted audiences with titles from Annie to Newsies, and most recently, Cinderella (Broadway) in 2024.

Tickets for Tarzan go on sale July 1 at stmaryscountymd.gov/recreate/summerstock. For show inquiries, contact Summerstock Producer Chris Lengle at Chris.Lengle@stmaryscountymd.gov.
